Dev Update – August 2026

Heyo all! 👋 It’s that time again for another monthly recap on the development of Chirp Chirp – my lighthearted precision platformer where you help guide your Little Bird back home – and it’s been an exciting month of dev, buckle up!

This past month has been kind of wild for progress as this was the first month of full-production. A lot of time was spent on production planning and task breakdowns (legit some of my favourite parts of production), so now I have a fairly clear view of what each month / sprint looks like for the remainder of the year. I’ve also been planning some contract work needed on the project, and am VERY excited to get the chance to work with a couple of amazing old teammates of mine for later in the fall – I’ll be sure to shout them out and share their work in the coming months!

Besides some production planning and logistics, there has also been a HUGE push on getting a lot of the backend elements setup and tightened to help ensure there is a good foundation to build the rest of the game on. Some highlights so far:

  • Full Save / Load system implemented (and supports level progression)
  • Player Movement and Upgrade system updated
  • Singing Mechanic implemented (learn songs to progress and uncover secrets)
  • Menu Template in place for Title Screen and In Game Menus
  • Input Management system to support many control types (with realtime hot swapping)
  • Steam store / build setup, as well as Steam Deck playable (so fun!)

It’s been a fairly tedious push, but now the foundation of the project is much stronger, which means I’m ready to do a proper big push on content creation next (a lot of levels!) – eat your veggies before you get your dessert haha.

Oh, and one last thing – I wanted to give a BIG shoutout to my old crew at Bit Reactor, LLC, the talented team has been working so hard on their upcoming game “Star Wars – Zero Company”. They’ve just had some incredible previews coverage and are just weeks away from release, so do yourself a favour and check it out, the team is absolutely crushing it and the game is going to be an amazing experience!

That’s it for now! It may not be the most flashiest update – but whew this project is finally starting to feel like a game (especially in the production sense) and I am so pumped for the next several months of development!

Take care all!
– Jay
